Air Force’s B-1 Bomber Fleet Months Ahead of Repair Schedule

The U.S. Air Force's B-1B Lancer fleet is no longer as broken as it used to be, according to a top general.
The readiness of the long-range supersonic bomber fleet is improving, and its recovery and maintenance are well ahead of schedule, thanks to concentrated resources dedicated to bringing the workhorse airframe out of its previous abysmal state, Gen. Tim Ray, head of Air Force Global Strike Command, said Wednesday.

Army Takes First Step Toward Equipping Tactical, Combat Vehicles with El...

The U.S. Air Force has issued its official request for proposal to acquire a small fleet of turboprop aircraft as part of its light attack effort.

The service wants a limited number of Textron Aviation AT-6 Wolverine and Sierra Nevada Corporation/Embraer Defense & Security A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to increase "partner capacity, capability, and interoperability via training and experimentation," officials said in a news release Friday.
A contract award is expected before year's end for the A-29, and in early 2020 for the AT-6.

Marine Corps CH-53K King Stallion Helicopter On Track To Become Heaviest...

T

he CH-53K King Stallion helicopter being developed by Sikorsky for the U.S. Marine Corps has overcome early challenges and is meeting all key performance objectives. The program is on schedule to complete testing and commence operational deployments in 2023.

No U.S. military service has previously tried to develop a rotorcraft with the lift and handling features of the King Stallion. The Marine Corps specified a detailed series of performance requirements for the CH-53K, but the most critical was that it must be able to deliver a payload of 27,000 pounds over a distance of 110 nautical miles (127 statute miles) in 90-degree weather, and then return safely to its point of origin.

Chinook Block II Upgrade Programme

Boeing’s CH-47 Chinook, in service since the Vietnam War, is currently the U.S. Army’s only heavy-lift cargo helicopter. With such a long and active service record, the CH-47 has seen its fair share of retrofit and upgrade programs, the most recent being the D-to-F Service Life Extension Program (SLEP). The first CH-47F prototype flew nearly two decades ago, in 2001, and the Army has been remanufacturing CH-47Ds to the F configuration and building new-production CH-47Fs ever since. As of mid-2019, the Army had taken delivery of more than 460 out of a planned 475 Block I CH-47Fs. The Block I upgrade, which is edging ever-nearer to completion, was not, however, intended to be the final evolution of the CH-47F, at least not according to the FY19 DoD budget. The CH-47 Block I to Block II program, which was to be funded at $881.2 million (including training and support) from FY21-FY23 per the FY19 budget, had been removed from FY20-FY24 spending plans as of early 2019. Here’s what we know about the status of the Chinook’s Block II upgrade program.

Bell V-280 Flies 322 MPH, Army Secretary Praises Program

Bell’s V-280 Valor prototype exceeded 280 knots this week, making good on the aircraft’s namesake speed, the company announced this afternoon.

And it’ll fly faster before it’s done, a Bell executive. The news is the latest public triumph for Bell’s tiltrotor technology at a time when its rival for the Army-led Future Vertical Lift program, the Sikorsky-Boeing SB-1 Defiant, is still in ground testing after repeated delays. And, coincidentally or otherwise, Army Secretary Mark Esper went out of his way this afternoon to praise FVL as a model for Army modernization.
